Gutters are a crucial part of your home that help protect the foundation and roof from damage caused by rain water. That’s why it’s important to regularly inspect them after storms to make sure that they’re not neglected or damaged. Leaky gutters may not be on the top of your priority list, but when they’re left unchecked and unrepaired, you may be unknowingly racking up a massive construction bill due to all of the harm they can cause your home. Read on to learn why gutters can become leaky and how to repair them.

Signs of Leaky Gutters

After it rains, it’s a good idea to walk around the perimeter of your home and take note of where water is falling from your roof. If you notice water leaking from areas it shouldn’t be, this is an indication that it could be clogged, or you have a leaking gutter. Once you pinpoint the area, you can further investigate it by checking for stains on the sidewalk or walk ways or puddles of water collected in areas of the grass, directly next to the foundation.

Causes of Leaky Gutters

There are a few primary problems that can result in gutter that leak. These include some of the following:

  • Blockage: Over time, gutters can easily become clogged and blocked by falling leaves, sticks, and other debris. This inhibits the flow of the water through the gutters and downspout, causing a buildup that leads to the water running over the sides and pooling around the foundation of your home.
  • Holes & Gaps: Critters, corrosion, and damage from debris can create holes and gaps in your gutters which results in the water dripping straight through them and collecting in one area near your home.
  • Loose Gutters: Gutters are secured to the home using hidden hangers. If one of these becomes loose, it can cause runoff rain water to flow over the rear edge of the gutters and damage the fascia board that they’re secured to.
  • Improperly Pitched Gutters: When gutters are placed, they’re anchored at a specific angle that allows them to effectively drain rain water away from the home. Realigning them can make sure that water doesn’t sit in them and cause them to work improperly.
  • Separated Joints: There are joints that connect the gutters to the downspouts. Over time, these may become damaged or deteriorated from debris collection and result in leaking.

Avoid Costly Construction Bills With Gutter Repair

One easy way you can prevent costly bills caused by water damage is to get a protective leaf guard on your gutters. This is a mesh overlay that prevents the buildup of debris in them that commonly leads to the deterioration. If you do notice that your gutters are leaky, it’s important to call your local gutter specialist to get them repaired before they cause drastic damage to your home.
