Your gutters work hard around the year to quietly channel rainwater away from your roof, siding, and foundation. But like any part of your home, they don’t last forever. In fact, many homeowners don’t even realize it when their gutter system is failing until they’re dealing with a much bigger and more expensive issue! That said, knowing the warning signs can help you catch trouble early and save you from a headache and costly repairs. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Visible Cracks
Small cracks might seem harmless at first, but they tend to grow over time, especially when you consider Texas’s temperature swings. Once water starts seeping through a crack, it can run down your siding or pool near your foundation. One or two small cracks might be repairable, but if you’re noticing several cracks across different sections, it usually means the material needs replacement.
2. Peeling Paint & Rust
If you notice paint peeling or bubbling near your gutters, it likely means water is going places where it shouldn’t. This also often manifests as rust patches, especially in steel gutters—which typically can’t be repaired as easily as aluminum, meaning full replacement is often needed.
3. Sagging or Pulling Away from the Roofline
Gutters should sit snugly against your roof in a straight, even line, and if sections are sagging or pulling away from your house, or hanging at odd angles, it’s usually a sign that they’re failing. Sagging gutters cannot drain properly, which means water will likely spill over the sides every time it rains and collect near your home.
4. Frequent Clogs
You should aim to clean your gutters at least once a year, and even then, occasional clogs are possible. But if you find yourself constantly dealing with clogged gutters, or water that constantly flows over the sides of your gutters, it might point to an unidentified problem or failing gutters. Remember, most gutter systems are built to last around 20 years or so.
The bottom line is, spotting an issue early can save you a great deal of trouble (and money) in the future if it turns out that your home needs new gutters! If you’ve noticed any of these signs, don’t wait to get a team out to your home for an evaluation.
