Man cleaning his guttersTaking care of your gutter system is essential to extend the life your gutters. By making sure there is no buildup and repairing damage right away, you’ll be able to keep your gutters functional for years. A properly maintained gutter system will not only prevent the need for replacement, but functioning gutters also decrease the need for home repairs and protect the foundation from damage.

1 – Carefully Remove Leaves & Debris

You should take the time to carefully remove leaves, mud, and other debris from the gutters several times a year. Every home is different, but you’ll get used to how the seasons affect your home and gutters. Cleaning out gutters two or three times each year is typically adequate, but you should also clean out the gutters any time you notice buildup or clogs.

2 – Check All of Your Downspouts for Clogs

During or after a heavy rain, check the downspouts to ensure the water is flowing freely and there are no clogs. A clogged gutter can put pressure on the system leading to sagging. If water sits in the gutters, it can lead to mildew or mold growth and cause the spikes that hold gutters in place to shift.

3 – Check Your Gutter Spikes

Spikes are the long connectors that go through the gutters and eaves and into the rafters under the roof. If the spikes do not go completely through to the rafters, you will need to have them reset or replaced. Spikes usually become loose before they completely break away from the house, so if you notice any spikes that are shifting, repair these right away.

4 – Use Water to Clean Out the Gutters

You can use a hose or a power washer to completely clean out the gutter once leaves and debris are removed. As long as you’ve fixed or replaced damaged spikes and ensured there are no clogs, your gutters will not be damaged by cleaning with water pressure. This also ensures your gutter system is completely functional and there are no leaks.

5 – Look for Leaks

Once the whole system is clear, run water through the system to look for holes, cracks in the caulking at the seams, or other areas of damage that may be leaking. Repair any leaks right away. If you need assistance repairing your gutter system, contact a professional gutter company to help.
