A family outside of a house.Did you know that gutters come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and styles? Some may match your home better in terms of color, while others may be more appropriate depending on your climate. With any high-purchase decision, you definitely don’t want to make the wrong choice and end up paying for it later (either for replacing them or for fixing damages to your home due to weather.)

Here’s what a gutter company in Keller says you should consider.

Start with the Shape

Gutters typically come in two different shapes. These include half-round styles and K-style. The styles refer to the shape of the cross-section itself, which specifically refers to the area long the top edge.

For example, K-style gutters have a cross-section similar to crown molding. Their traits include:

  • A slight curve along the front side
  • Sections that bend
  • A flat back and bottom

Alternatively, half-round gutters have a round, tube-like cross-section that’s often seen on older homes. Overall, this shape blends in better with historic properties and homes with an older architecture design.

When choosing a shape, most gutter companies will recommend K-style because of their versatility. They can easily blend in well with Victorian and modern homes. In fact, K-style gutters account for 80 percent of all new installations.

However, half-round gutters have been making a resurgence thanks to their aesthetic appeal. Manufacturers are even making them with more materials, making them easier to install, and even including hidden hanger options and customizations for your desired length.

With shapes out of the way, let’s talk materials.

Gutters By Material

Gutters can be made from four different materials: copper, vinyl, aluminum, and steel. Each material has it’s own pros and cons, so make sure to consider all of them before making a decision.

Copper – One of the largest benefits of copper gutters is they won’t rust. In fact, they’ll only darken over time and develop what exterior designers call a patina. This is a green or brown film that appears on copper as a result of oxidization, giving your home a more historic aesthetic.

Vinyl – Vinyl gutters are lightweight and easy to install, but they often fade over time. Their colors are also limited.

Aluminum – One of the most common choices of gutter material, aluminum doesn’t rust and is easy to install due to their light weight. While they come in many colors, you can easily paint them as well to match your home.

Steel – While steel gutters are heavy and can rust after five to 10 years of use, they are very strong and ideal for strong weather conditions. They also come in many colors.
