There’s no question that clogged gutters have the potential to cause damage to your home and surrounding perimeter. But ice dams are far more difficult to deal with because you can’t just clean them with a spade and a ladder. They require more tools, time and patience in comparison. If you already don’t find cleaning your gutters fun, then dealing with the effects of snowfall is going to feel like a nightmare.

That’s why now is the time to gutter prep. Take note of these steps to ensure you don’t catch yourself on a ladder melting ice dams with a water hose.

Clean The Gutters

If you live in a deciduous area, you’ll likely need to clean your gutters on a more regular basis. As leaves, twigs and other organic debris begin to accumulate inside your gutter, it’s going to block water from properly traveling downspout. If it’s been a long time since you’ve cleaned them, the debris may even cause the gutter to sag, threatening the angle at which it sits. As a general rule, those who live in areas with many trees should clean their gutters once every three months.

Trim Trees Around Your Home

Trimming the branches above your home can do a world of favors for you throughout the year, not just when winter rolls around. However, another good reason to trim the branches is to prevent their ends from freezing over and snapping off. As they land on your roof and slide into your gutters, they can clog them further. If the twigs are sitting in water and that water freezes over, it will only make removing them more difficult.

Repair and Perform Routine Maintenance

Just like any other part of your home, routine maintenance is essential for your gutter system. This means making sure all screws holding your gutters together are tight. It means sealing the end caps to prevent water from dripping out the sides. Without checking your gutter’s major components, your system can easily sag and blow in the wind. If your screws cannot be tightened, consider installing a gutter hanger for better stability.

Consider a Heating Cable/Heating Tape

After you’ve performed all the maintenance you can, now is the time to consider a heating cable. These devices are designed to distribute gentle heat on the bottom of your gutters and periodically running them throughout the winter can prevent ice dams outright. You can also use heating tape if you’d prefer not to use an extension cord.

While we all want to make our gutter systems last, you may need to consider replacing your system if it’s beyond repair. Thankfully, a professional gutter company is the perfect place to contact should you need to. If your gutters are damaged, don’t hesitate to call one today!
